LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Dear Colleague,Embedded Vision Summit

We have just released another batch of great presentation videos from the recent Embedded Vision Summit. First, make sure to check out the highly rated keynote presentation "Bringing Computer Vision to the Consumer," delivered by Mike Aldred, Electronics Lead at Dyson. The company's 360 Eye robot vacuum cleaner uses computer vision as its primary localization technology. Mike’s talk charts some of the high and lows of the project, the challenges of bridging between academia and business, and how to use a diverse team to take an idea from the lab into real homes.

Next is "Efficient Implementation of Convolutional Neural Networks using OpenCL on FPGAs," presented by Deshanand Singh of Altera. In this talk, Deshanand gives a detailed explanation of how convolutional neural networks (CNN) algorithms, which are becoming increasingly popular in vision applications, can be expressed in OpenCL and compiled directly to FPGA hardware. Also not to be missed is "Understanding Adaptive Machine Learning Vision Algorithms and Implementing Them on GPUs and Heterogeneous Platforms," from Harris Gasparakis of AMD. Harris shows how OpenCL, HSA (Heterogeneous System Architecture) and integrated GPUs enhance the tool kits of vision software developers.

If you’re new to vision technology, be sure to check out "Creating Smarter, More Interactive Apps and Systems with Computer Vision," delivered by Alliance founder Jeff Bier at last month's Augmented World Expo. From consumer electronics to smartphones to smart glasses to retail and industrial applications, vision technology enables new types of interactivity, new types of insights, and new types of experiences. Jeff highlights some of the coolest new products and applications leveraging vision technology, and explores some of the key trends and associated challenges.

And speaking of presentations, please visit the Alliance's new SlideShare channel, where we'll regularly upload new presentations delivered at Embedded Vision Summits and other industry events. Follow us on SlideShare to receive notification of new content uploads. And for timely notification of the publication of content on the Alliance's own website, subscribe to our RSS feed and Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn company and group, and Twitter social media channels. Thanks as always for your support of the Embedded Vision Alliance, and for your interest in and contributions to embedded vision technologies, products and applications. If you have an idea as to how the Alliance can better service your needs, please contact me.

"How to Make the World More Interactive: Augmented Reality as the Interface Between Wearable Tech and the Internet of Things," a Presentation from Ori Inbar of AugmentedReality.orgAugmentedReality
Ori Inbar, co-founder and CEO of AugmentedReality.org, presents the "How to Make the World More Interactive: Augmented Reality as the Interface Between Wearable Tech and the Internet of Things" tutorial at the May 2014 Embedded Vision Summit. In this talk, Inbar explains how augmented reality, which relies heavily on embedded vision, is transitioning from a bleeding-edge technology embraced mainly by enthusiasts to a mainstream commercial technology with applications in diverse markets ranging from mobile devices to retail point-of-sale systems to enterprise and industrial systems. He also relates the discussion to related trends in wearable computing and the Internet of Things.

NVIDIA Demonstration of its Drive PX ADAS Platform for Object IdentificationNVIDIA
Mike Houston, Principal Engineer for Mobile and Cloud Computing at NVIDIA, demonstrates the company's latest embedded vision technologies and products at the January 2015 Consumer Electronics Show. Specifically, Houston demonstrates various object identification applications running on the company's Drive PX ADAS platform, based on the Tegra X1 SoC.

Show Report: 2015 Image Sensor Auto Conferencevideantis
Image Sensor Auto Conference attendance grew 50% from last year's show also held in Brussels, Belgium, according to Marco Jacobs, Vice President of Marketing at videantis, proof that cameras are a key component in making vehicles safer and ultimately autonomous. Recurring themes in formal presentations and hallway conversations alike included "Cameras Save Lives," "It’s Not About Where We’re Going; It’s About How We Get There," and "It’s All About System-Level Optimization." Technology Changes Drive Thermal Camera Market to $500 Million by 2019IHS
A new report by IHS estimates that the world market for uncooled thermal cameras in commercial security applications was worth $245.0 million in 2014, and will grow to nearly $500 million in 2019. IHS expects that within the next 12 months, the market will start to shift away from 17 micron sensors to smaller pixel pitch sensors. This is expected to have significant implications on the price of thermal cameras. IHS expects that price declines and the release of lower-end entry level products will allow thermal cameras to gain traction in commercial markets that have traditionally been unable to justify their high prices.
