Autonomous Navigation in Industrial Robotics:

Imagine a robot navigating a dynamic factory floor. Instead of following pre-programmed paths, it uses simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) to explore and react in real time.By fusing LiDAR, IMU, and visual data (from a RealSense depth camera for example) it can generate a live voxel map of its environment. This map is constructed by combining depth images and odometry data to build a 3D point cloud.

That point cloud is processed to identify free and occupied spaces, then converted into a 2D occupancy map used for real-time path planning. This level of autonomy is only possible through robust sensor fusion, processing visual SLAM, IMU, and wheel odometry in concert to deliver precise pose estimation and obstacle avoidance.

What’s the difference between sensor data aggregation and sensor fusion?
Aggregation means collecting raw data streams from multiple sensors into one place. Fusion goes a step further: combining and interpreting that data to create higher-level insights. How do I choose the “right” sensors for my IoT project?
