The automotive market is undergoing a tremendous amount of rapid change. Automotive manufacturers are exploring the potential of adding various new functions and reconfiguring existing functions to all include some level of intelligence. This covers the range from merely intelligent functions all the way to fully autonomous driving functions that incorporate some level of Artificial Intelligence. A significant portion of designs, revenues and unit shipments will come from AI SoCs that use the RISC-V architecture in the next few years. Semico anticipates the adoption rate to be even higher over time in the Automotive sector. A new report from Semico Research, Analyzing the Automotive Market Potential for RISC-V CPU SIP (SC119-22) forecasts the Advanced RISC-V AI SoCs High-end Passenger Car market segment to reach $819M dollars by 2027.
“Against this backdrop of architectural and functional exploration are the current supply problems of semiconductors aimed at automotive applications and the worldwide supply chain problems jointly caused by disruptions in the labor force and fluctuations in demand both caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,” says Rich Wawrzyniak, Semico Principal Analyst for SoC and ASIC Research. “In order to secure a steady supply of the semiconductors needed to produce their vehicles in a timely manner, most, if not all, of the automotive manufacturers have embarked on creating their own internal SoC design groups with the intention of using the silicon foundry network to supply the parts. They will still use off-the-shelf parts wherever possible, but given both the changing application requirements and the uncertainty of exactly which functions or the implementation of those functions will be the right combination, the automotive manufacturers are acting to gain more control over their own destinies by designing their own solutions.”
Key findings in the study include:
- Total Automotive SoC shipments for Advanced SoCs will reach 703M units by 2027.
- Total Automotive Value Multicore SoC revenues are forecasted to be $5.7B dollars in 2022.
- Total Automotive Basic SoC market revenues will have a CAGR of 8.8% by 2027.
- Total Basic SoCs in the SUV market segment are forecast to reach 139M units by 2027.
