Embedded Vision from the Camera to Image Processing with FPGAs

Vision Components at embedded world exhibition

Ettlingen, March 19, 2024 – Vision Components will showcase innovations for fast and easy embedded vision integration at embedded world, from the first MIPI camera with IMX900 image sensor for industrial applications to an update of the VC Power SoM FPGA accelerator. The tiny board enables efficient real-time image processing and can be easily and quickly integrated into mainboard designs. It processes barcode reading and 3D stereo image capture at up to 120 Hertz. VC picoSmart, the world’s smallest embedded vision system, and the VC picoSmart 3D profile sensor based on it will also be on show at the trade fair.

MIPI Ecosystem for easy integration

With its VC MIPI Ecosystem, Vision Components demonstrates how perfectly matched components enable the fast, simple and cost-effective integration of image processing. The VC MIPI IMX900 MIPI camera is a new addition to this modular system. The ultra-compact global shutter camera module with a sensor diagonal of just 5.8 mm delivers high image quality even in low light conditions and has a high dynamic range extending into the infrared range. With a resolution of 3.2 megapixels, it can be used universally, whether for navigating autonomous robots, recognizing barcodes or in quality assurance.

FPGA accelerator and workshop on FPGA programming

Part of the VC MIPI ecosystem is also the upgraded FPGA accelerator VC Power SoM, which can be integrated as a component in mainboard designs. It performs efficient image processing, for example reading barcodes or 3D stereo image fusion at up to 120 Hertz. To help customers get started with image processing using FPGAs, Vision Components and Efinix are organizing the joined hands-on workshop “FPGA Programming for Embedded Vision” on April 23rd. It covers the basics of design-in and FPGA programming. The workshop is aimed at FPGA programmers for advanced training in the field of image processing and at vision experts, who want to expand their skills in the implementation of image processing algorithms on FPGAs.

The smallest embedded vision system and ready-to-use 3D laser profilers

In addition to the VC MIPI Ecosystem, further key displays at the show are embedded vision systems, including the world’s smallest complete vision system on a single board, VC picoSmart. Vision Components will also be presenting its VC nano3D-Z series of laser profile sensors, which have been deployed successfully and numerous times for real-time angle measurement in metal processing and for volume measurement in the food industry, among other applications.
