Optimizing Warehousing Efficiency: Arducam’s Custom Barcode Scanning Solution for Smart Forklifts

In the rapid evolution of smart warehousing, the forklift has transformed from a simple lifting machine into a sophisticated mobile data hub. For an Automated Identification Solutions provider, the challenge isn’t just about “taking a picture” of a barcode; it’s about capturing high-fidelity data in chaotic, real-world environments where light, motion, and reflective materials conspire against traditional sensors.

Arducam recently collaborated with a leader in this space to overcome specific technical bottlenecks that were stalling their next-generation forklift identification system.

Critical Hurdles in Forklift Automation

When our client approached us, their existing vision systems were struggling with three decisive factors that prevented reliable 24/7 operation:

  • Insufficient Frame Rates: In a fast-moving logistics environment, speed is everything. Their system required a consistent throughput of at least 10fps at high resolutions to ensure no pallet was missed as the forklift moved through the aisles.
  • Focus Calibration for Proprietary Code: The client utilized self-developed algorithms that required precise control over the focal plane. Standard fixed-focus modules lacked the granular adjustment of motor parameters needed to sharpen images at specific industrial distances.
  • The “Shrink-Wrap” Reflection: A major physical challenge was the reflective nature of plastic pallet wrap. These specular reflections (glare) often obscured barcode patterns, rendering even high-resolution images unreadable by the decoding engine.

The Arducam Solution

High-Resolution HDR Performance

Rather than offering a generic scanner, we deployed a High-Resolution HDR Vision Module specifically optimized for industrial-grade data capture. While this module delivers ultra-high-resolution imaging, its true power lies in how we tuned it to meet the client’s rigorous operational demands.

To address the frame rate requirement, our engineering team optimized the sensor’s data pipeline and firmware. We successfully achieved a stable output of ≥10fps at high resolution, providing the fluid visual stream necessary for real-time identification while the forklift is in motion.

Precision Optics and Open Calibration

For the focusing challenge, Arducam provided more than just hardware; we provided an open technical framework. We determined that a motor parameter value of 350 was the “sweet spot” for their application, providing a crystal-clear focus at the critical 1-meter mark. This calibration successfully balanced near-field and far-field clarity, ensuring a wide working depth of field.

Furthermore, to support the client’s proprietary tuning process, we supplied unglued camera modules and adjustable focus rings. This allowed their engineers to perform fine-tuned manual adjustments in-house, ensuring the hardware was perfectly harmonized with their custom software logic.

Eliminating Glare with Polarized Imaging

To address reflections from plastic packaging, we integrated specialized polarizing filters (PL Filters) into the optical assembly. By performing multiple rounds of testing and light-path optimization, we were able to filter out the polarized glare bouncing off the shrink wrap. This resulted in a high-contrast image where the barcode remains sharp and visible, regardless of the reflective materials or warehouse lighting angles.

This combination of HDR (High Dynamic Range) and polarized optics ensures that even under the glare of auxiliary lighting or sunlight near loading docks, the system maintains a near-perfect identification rate.

One Solution, Infinite Scenarios

The forklift application is just one chapter. Arducam’s Barcode Scan Solution portfolio spans across diverse industries and “Scanning Personas”:

  • Static Scanning (Retail/POS): High-speed rolling shutter modules for self-checkout kiosks where the distance is fixed.
  • High-Speed Motion (Conveyor Belts): Global Shutter modules to eliminate motion blur on fast-moving production lines.
  • Precision Tracking (Medical Labs): Micro-focus modules for scanning tiny 2D codes on test tubes and vials.
  • Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs): Low-latency GMSL2/FPD-Link III modules for long-distance data transmission across large robotic platforms.

Standard Reliability with Flexible Support

While Arducam is known for tackling complex custom projects, our primary goal is to provide high-performance, standardized products ready for immediate deployment. By choosing Arducam, clients get the best of both worlds: a robust, off-the-shelf product line built for longevity, backed by the technical flexibility to accommodate specific integration needs when they arise.

Our commitment is to provide a stable, long-term supply of these high-performance modules, allowing our partners to scale their automated systems without worrying about hardware consistency or technical roadblocks.
