Yole Group has released Automotive Semiconductor Trends 2026, a new market report examining how electrification, advanced driver-assistance systems, centralized computing and software-defined vehicle architectures are reshaping the automotive semiconductor industry.
Yole forecasts that the market will more than double from $77 billion in 2025 to $160 billion in 2031, representing a compound annual growth rate of approximately 13%. This expansion is being driven less by growth in vehicle production than by the increasing value of the semiconductor content installed in each vehicle.
Compute processors, power semiconductors and memory are among the principal beneficiaries. Electric and hybrid powertrains require increasingly sophisticated power-conversion electronics, while advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), automated-driving functions and AI-enabled cockpit features are creating demand for substantially more computing and memory capacity.
At the same time, vehicle electrical and electronic architectures are becoming more centralized. Automakers are beginning to consolidate functions previously distributed among numerous electronic control units into domain controllers, zonal architectures and high-performance central computing platforms. In ADAS and cockpit systems in particular, these platforms must process data from cameras and other sensors, run increasingly complex AI models and coordinate multiple vehicle functions in real time.
The report also examines changes in the competitive landscape. Automakers including Li Auto and BYD are developing proprietary processors as they seek greater control over vehicle capabilities, software platforms and product differentiation. This vertical integration is especially prominent in China, where Yole says domestically developed automotive systems-on-chip fabricated using process technologies of 5 nm or below are emerging as competitors to platforms such as NVIDIA DRIVE Thor.
These developments could alter long-established relationships among automakers, Tier 1 suppliers and semiconductor vendors. Semiconductor selection is becoming more closely connected to vehicle-level architecture and software strategy, while automakers and Chinese technology companies are taking on roles previously left largely to established chip and system suppliers.
